Medan Pasar: The Old Market Square of Kuala Lumpur by Robert Powell

Discover the fascinating story of Medan Pasar, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most historically significant urban spaces. From its origins in 1857 as a trading post at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, the book traces the transformation of the Old Market Square through tin mining, British colonial rule, and the growth of Malaysia’s banking, legal and commercial centre.

Through historical research, architectural insights and rich visual documentation, Robert Powell explores the changing streetscapes, buildings and communities that have shaped Medan Pasar over nearly 170 years. The book reveals how migration, commerce, urban development and architectural movements have influenced the character of this historic district.

Looking towards the future, the book examines ongoing efforts to rejuvenate Medan Pasar through heritage conservation, adaptive reuse and cultural initiatives. An essential read for architecture enthusiasts, history lovers, urban researchers and anyone interested in Kuala Lumpur’s heritage, this publication offers a deeper understanding of the city’s past and its evolving identity.
